Q. You released your first album, Sub Conscious, in 2004, who were your early influences?
A. I was influenced by a wide variety of music and themes in my life at that point in time. Musically I was influenced by everything from Depeche Mode & Nine Inch Nails, to early Trance and House Music… artists like Oliver Lieb, Sven Vath, Ralf Hildenbeutel, as well as current electronic artists like Ott, Simon Posford & Evan Bluetech, and vocalists like Lisa Gerrard, Elizabeth Frazier and Sheila Chandra. I was also in a bit of an awakening…. realizing just how big the world really is and was influenced by sounds, melodies, percussion and vocals that were previously foreign to my ears. I’m endlessly fascinated by the similarities and differences between cultures and their music and people.
Q. Flash forward to 2012, who seems to be your biggest inspiration currently?
A. The list has only grown much larger since then. It’s hard to site particular artists as much these days, partly because of the advent of digital downloads…. The ability to cherry pick only that which we most like at the time means that I have a much wider range of artists that I have at my dispense, and therefore am influenced by…. but often only by a track or two from that artist, as opposed to entire albums. More than anything with “Kinetik” I was reaching for a sound and vibe that would equally move me to dance (hence the album title) as it would reward a focused listening session. Thankfully I’ve received a lot of feedback to that end ….. and with instrumental music and it’s ability to be interpreted in such a wide variety of ways it’s great to hear that my intent and message was received by the listeners. Moving forward I see myself exploring further in that direction while also trying something new. I’ve become much more “kinetik” myself in many ways (actually and figuratively) and it’s coming out in my Music.
Q. How do you think your music has evolved over the years?
A. Well I can say that it certainly has evolved …. as of late it’s been more on the electronic side which is what has been interesting me the most lately. However for the release I’m currently working on, I’m hoping to produce some tracks that explore some organic instrumentation again. (I say hope because sometimes what I set out to do and the finish results are vastly different from one another.) I’ve also really been enjoying lyrical vocals again so my next release will likely feature some vocalists on a handful of tunes. But who knows, if you ask me tomorrow I might have a completely different take on it.
Q. Anything special planned for your performance at SONIC BLOOM?
A. I’ll have some new tunes with me that I’ll be sure to pour out of the sound system. I also have a Massive Attach – Tear Drop Remix that I’ll be releasing for free right around that time. I’ve been hearing great things about Sonic Bloom for years now, and it’s quite exciting to be performing there this year…. so I’ll certainly be making the most of it, both on and off stage.
Q. Deserted Island? or Private Ski Resort?
A. Didn’t you know ….. I’m responding to this interview from my own private deserted island (that just happens to have wifi) as we speak. In fact the mermaids are in desperate needs of attention so I should be going now. See you at the Bloom! XO
